Side Effects, Verona Red's debut full-length album, was released in November, 2008, to more than 400 people at Chicago's Double Door. The album was a change in a "dancier" direction, and highlights their ability to combine distorted blues-saturated vocals, provocative guitar riffs and boisterous sing-alongs into a sexy and undeniable rock and roll sound. Roctober Magazine commended the album's originality, saying "It's rare to get actual twists and turns in indie rock these days (other than the contrived pre-determined ones of twisty turny-core bands), so hearing this band shift gears between hard, slinky, bouncy, ominous, rootsy, and points in between is refreshing."
The single "No Way Home," released in 2010 was recorded and self-produced in a small church on the southside of Chicago. A tribal-influenced dance-jam, the song quickly became a live show favorite. While its structure may be less conventional than anything on Side Effects, the rock and roll energy they're known for is still front and center. The single was released at Chicago's Beat Kitchen, and is available to download for free on their bandcamp page.
Pound, a 7-song EP, was released on February 4, 2011, at Chicago's Subterranean. Founded on rock and roll, the album displays Verona Red's widest range of influences yet. As with Side Effects, elements of blues and swing are heavily laced within the tracks, but Pound also introduces a strong backwoods honky tonk and soul sound previously unheard from the band. Pound hosts an eclectic mix of writing styles, yet presents an undeniable Verona Red sound.
